May 7, 2011 The Kentucky Derby, run each year on the first Saturday in May, has been called the most exciting two minutes in sports. However, for gardeners the thrill lasts all day and well into the gardening season. The Kentucky Derby is well known for it's beautiful landscapes and containers. There were over 150 combination and window boxes planted throughout the area - each an individual creation from the greenhouse department at Chuchill Downs. For the forth year in a row Supertunia® Vista Bubblegum and Supertunia Royal Velvet will be honored guests in center field without missing a beat. Before the opening races, the run for the Supertunias was a clear success - masses of color. |

The Smart Home: Green + Wired exhibit, a fully-functioning, eco-friendly home on the Museum’s grounds, has been transformed for 2010 by Midwest Living. The home is redesigned to reflect the lifestyle of a couple looking to minimize home maintenance, maximize efficiency and settle in to a space that not only is beautiful, but functional. Proven Winners planted low maintence, heat tolerant, self cleaning plants that will last all summer long and well into the fall. To save time and water self watering containers by Lechuza were used and Proven Winners Waterwise system was added to the landscape. By using drippers instead of spray heads, the Waterwise kit requires no adjusting of water flow. Once you set it up, the watering takes care of itself, and that means better plant growth, time savings, and water conservation.
